Mocha Club Interns (”Mochaterns”) here. Just wanted to let you guys know that World Water Day is just around the corner, on March 22. This is a day dedicated to bringing awareness to unsafe and inadequate water sources. In honor of World Water Day, we have developed a new campaign for Mocha Club. You can join the Mochaterns as we investigate all things water by visiting mochaclub.org/ripple-effect. Help us with our first task – solving this riddle: What gives 15 Africans clean water, helps you reach your target weight, and has a silver lining? Reply with your answer on twitter with the hashtag #MCwater and keep an eye out for weekly water facts.

“I Need Africa” in Malawi
Our I Need Africa campaign makes it all the way to Malawi…here’s Mocha Club member Michelle Murrey wearing her shirt while caring for children in Malawi – January 2010. Thanks for sending in these photos, Michelle!
Says Michelle,
“That day was a lot of fun. The girls’ grandfather worked in the restaurant where I worked for about three weeks. He and his wife are raising at least four grandchildren, three children, maybe more. His brother passed away three days before I left, so he may have even more children at home now. All of this is done on a salary of less than $100 per month. Imagine… and yet, he still shows up every day, works hard every day, and manages to keep a smile on his face. I need Africa to remind me of what is good and pure and important in this world.“

World Food Day – Please Help!
This Friday, October 16th, is World Food Day. It is designed to increase awareness, understanding, and action to alleviate hunger around the world. Dr. Jeffrey Sachs in the Guardian News writes “…a billion people go hungry each day. We need a breakthrough that is demonstrable, public, clear and convincing that can mobilize the public’s hearts and minds and that can demonstrate success…the lives of the billion poorest people depend on it.”
As we can see, the global economic crisis is stalking the small-scale farms of the world where 70 percent of the world’s hungry live and work. There is an estimate increase of 105 million hungry people this year, bringing the number of malnourished people in the world to 1.02 billion. This means that almost 1/6 of all humanity is suffering from hunger.
In Africa particularly, more than 210 million people are chronically malnourished without the means to sustain their lives. Several African countries are suffering right now with famine and drought. The nation of Kenya is experiencing its worst drought in 10 years, creating a shortage of food, and people are literally starving.
10 million Kenyans (out of a population of 27 million) are experiencing a serious food insecurity. Food Yields for the nation have dropped by over a quarter, while food prices have gone up a staggering 130%. The UN World Food Program has announced that food aid has hit a 20 year low.
Mocha Club has decided to focus on the area of Kitui, Kenya, a city east of Nairobi. We have been sponsoring a group of orphans there for the past few years. Kitui is a community largely affected by the drought, with no documentation of rain since May of 2006.
A donation of $17 provides food for a family in Kitui for 3 months.
