We are here. And we are jet-lagged.

Editor’s note: Mocha Club member and volunteer, Annie, is blogging from Capetown, South Africa on the Mocha Club trip from May 28th-June 10th. This is our first official “trip blogger” so please help us spread the word and check back for updates!

pre-preschoolOur first full day in Cape Town is finished. Phew…And these friends of yours are exhausted. We landed this morning around 9am and Pastor Young Ohm [African Leadership's National Director in South Africa] and some of the other staff picked us up from the airport. It took all the strength we could muster to keep our eyelids open through out the day. Even now, at 7:30pm, we are all sitting around the table, eating dessert, and staring blankly at each other. It’s a touching moment, really.

Let me tell you about our dinner- 10 Americans, a Korean family [Pastor Ohm's], a Canadian missionary, and a German volunteer, having Vietnamese noodle soup in South Africa. And apple crisp for dessert. Obviously.

Pastor Ohm spent the day showing us all around Khayelitsha, the township where we will be doing most of our work. We stopped and looked at a couple of different preschools- in total, African Leadership has built 20 different preschools in Khayelitsha. Which may sound like a lot, but there are over 1 million people in this area of only 2 miles by 4 miles. GOOD GRACIOUS that’s a lot folks.

Here’s the “before” pics. It’s like our own little version of Extreme Home Makeover. Let’s call it Extreme Preschool Makeover: Khayelitsha Edition. (Betsy said, “That doesn’t sound like a good title at all.” I just fired her as my editor.)

Hopefully by next Friday, we’ll have the “after” shots. Pastor Ohm thinks the ten of us (need I remind you only 3 dudes) can lay all the tile, build the inside walls, paint the inside and the outside, and install the door and windows by Friday.

I’m not saying I don’t appreciate his confidence in us. I’m just sayin’…

This picture also amazes me. This is the plot of land where the Mocha Club preschool will be built. So this area, that has thousands of people but no place for the preschool aged children, will finally get a school.

We spent a lot of time at the Pastor Training School as well. We got to attend a talent show for the net-ball team (all girls in their young teens) and we may have contributed to the talent show. Some singing, some dancing; we made you proud. Maybe.

We also went to a Bible Club for high schoolers where they posed some questions to our team – how to deal with peer pressure, faith, and how to handle certain events that happen in high school, etc. It was on-the-spot, we were flexible (as Marisa encourages), and our team did a fantastic job.

About 12 hours in the country, and we have all already been amazed. It’s already a moving experience – seeing the conditions that these people live in, the deep need, and the amazing ways that Mocha Club and African Leadership are meeting these needs. I can’t wait to see what happens after 10 days of working with these projects and experiencing Cape Town.

Observation: It is COLD here. The fact that it’s winter in the southern hemisphere should have encouraged us to pack better, but alas, it did not. So when you start seeing pictures of us and you think, “This was a pic from yesterday”, it’s probably not. We’re going to be wearing ALL of our clothes every day. Oh well.

Love us anyways, okay?

I Need Africa Art Show

Mocha Club member Missy Wood traveled on one of our trips last summer to Ethiopia. While she was there, Missy was able to take some amazing photographs that inspired her and her husband, Asher, to hold an art show in Nashville this spring. The Woods displayed their art at a downtown studio loft, and the one-night event featured wine and Ethiopian food, and a video Missy created explaining her trip and her vision to continue to raise money and support the projects she saw.

Donations at the door plus proceeds from the art sales went to our Education project in Ambo, Ethiopia to support street kids and our Women at Risk project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to support mothers.

What are ways you could use your gifts to raise money in your town? Email makechange [at] mochaclub [dot] org with your ideas!!

Just The Ten Of Us

Hi friends.

Well, it’s 6:20pm in London. We are about an hour away from boarding the plane and heading to Cape Town.

And before I continue, let me insert this fact: I have not slept very much in the past 36 hours. In fact, I believe I have slept 10% of the time. Which is a low percentage. So I am tired and this here blog post may reflect that.

Our team officially met for the first time yesterday. For the last few months, we have been meeting via conference calls since Ernie is from L.A., Ellie is from North Carolina, and Andrew is from Chicago. (The rest of the team are Nashvillians.) So it was awesome to finally all be together, talking constantly about what supplies we brought for the kids in Cape Town, going over our plans and thoughts, and remembering that all our plans could get changed, so “BE FLEXIBLE PEOPLE.” At least that’s what Marisa keeps saying.

And y’all. If you could see Ernie now. He is attempting to grind off a portion of his camera battery to make the prongs fit into an adapter. So pretty much, the background noise for this blog post is metal prongs grating against metal flooring. And it appears he’s actually getting somewhere. He’s like our own personal McGyver. (McGruber? Who’s with me? SNL? Come on, that’s funny.)

It’s been fun to spend time together as a team. And by time, I mean A LOT OF TIME. We flew into JFK in New York (where the above pic was taken) and then flew to London. Here in London we have had about 9 hours of layover time where we somehow, much to my poor feet’s chagrin, walked to Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Trafalgar Square. Now back at the airport, we are all far past exhaustion and either totally hilarious or horribly annoying.

Or in my case, both.

Ernie Halter

Ernie is sweating. He just walked by me to go test his newly shaven plug and he is   drenched. Being that innovative is a workout, people. I made Betsy take a picture, because you deserve to see this.

It’s time to head to the gate, so I’m gonna have to quit blogging. Which is always sad to me.

We arrive in Cape Town at 8am Saturday, May 30th, so hopefully we’ll get a chance this weekend to update you on how things are going. If Ernie gets this adapter thing worked out, maybe his next assignment will be wireless internet for our guest house in Cape Town.

Here’s to hoping,
Annie

VIDEO: Annie Packing for South Africa

Posted by christine, May 27, 2009

Editor’s note: We’re excited to announce that one of our Mocha Club members and volunteers, Annie, will be blogging from Capetown, South Africa on the Mocha Club trip that leaves on May 28th! This is our first official “trip blogger” so please help us spread the word and check back for updates!

Hi y’all. I should have known better. I should have known that if I planned to pack on Tuesday, it would actually get done on Wednesday. I’m not a great pre-packer. And honestly, the pressure of you waiting on the video is the only reason I’m packed now. A few things:

1) I’m learning how to use this newfangled flip video camera. It’s very cool, but forgive the shaky-shakes.

2) We have a professional video editor that works with us at Mocha Club. I am not her.

3) Once I finished the video, I realized I had forgotten to pack any pants. So for total honesty’s sake, you should know that I’m going to have to pack some pants.

We leave for South Africa from Nashville on Thursday, May 28th but don’t arrive in Cape Town until Saturday. We’ll update you as soon as we are able.

- Annie
