In a recent update, we asked you to pray for several of the orphan girls in Nyamlel, Sudan who were having seizures from a mysterious illness. We wanted to thank you for your prayers, as the girls are doing much better! All but one are back in school and seem to be stabilized. Mary Abuk (pictured below), who was the first one to have seizures, is not yet able to return to school.
We are thankful for the medical experts well-versed in diseases and health threats in Sudan who have helped the girls. Through a very thorough process of elimination, it became clear that the seizures were not related to the new dormitories thankfully, but that Mary Abuk experienced a traumatic incident while out collecting wood about 2 weeks before moving into the dorm. She said that a wild animal, which she believed to be a gorilla, came after her. That is when her seizures began. Once all the girls moved into the dorm and watched her have the seizures, other girls began to experience them as well.
All the doctors who have been assisting with this process think the cause is similar to ‘group hysteria’ – real seizures brought on by a chain of prolonged trauma that is then ignited by some culminating event. This should be a reminder of the atrocities that are still happening in Sudan and tha your help is so desperately needed! We know that the children can only be fully healed through Jesus Christ, but your support through Mocha Club helps us do all we can to protect, provide for and heal the children.
BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL EMAIL ABOUT THE SUDAN ORPHAN GIRLS:
We have an urgent Sudan update to share with you today…Last week, we shared the good news that the 200 orphan girls in Nyamlel, Sudan were able to move into their new dormitories. We just received word that 16 girls from the dorm have been struck with a mysterious illness and admitted to the local clinic. The numbers are growing each day. They are experiencing severe convulsions which progress into seizures 4-5 times a day. Mary Abuk, pictured here, is just one of the girls that is now sick. They have no fever but have severe headaches and seizures and are losing consciousness. Please Pray for these girls as our partners in Sudan seek council from doctors specializing in tropical diseases. We’ll keep you informed
